When we moved into our house was one of the first things I did to pull network cable length and breadth. My wife was not exactly fond of it and to access the network and the Internet had to sit in some rooms. Would I be in another room, it was dragging a long network that mattered. Now I have tested a product that allows a network via ordinary electrical outlet.
From network to wireless
This was of course a few years ago and much has happened since then. For example, we have restored papered and large parts of the housing. When it was all the network cables go to the happy hunting grounds. All cables were replaced with WiFi and yes, it has mostly worked well. However, there are some parts of the house where coverage is not quite as good. One example is our living room.

I’ve been thinking about pulling the network cable to just the living room. Since there are several things which can use the network, the idea has been to use a switch to thereby obtain more sockets. But the thought of pulling on this cable through half the house has made me give up. And then one fine day it one of those little good thing that solves the problem.
Linksys PLSK400 is a gadget (or two things) that allows network and thus the internet can go through the regular power grid and is it something that is plentiful in our house, it’s a great outlet.
Connect to the network through the electrical outlet
Easier than this could hardly be. I plugged in a network cable from the router to the device with a network jack and put it in the wall. After that I studied in the unit with four outlets in the living room and pulled a wire from one terminal to my Apple TV and an outlet on duty my computer. The computer on which I sit and write on now using the Internet over power lines in the house and it works amazingly well. The buffering problems that were previously on my AppleTV is like blown away.
Summary Linksys PLSK400
I think PLSK400 is affordable (for now 6-700kr) and will definitely get at least one adapter so that our file server at home can run wired. If you have need of the following is a good option:
- You have equipment that does not have integrated WiFi without the usual so-called RJ45 (for example, some media extenders).
- Your wireless network does not cover the whole house.
- You do not have WiFi at home and for some reason you do not pull a traditional network.
